Steps for using History Brush Tool

  1. Select File > Open.
  2. Now, convert your file to black and white. Select Image > Adjustment > Desaturate.
  3. Now, open “History Palette” by selecting Windows > History.
  4. In the History Palette, click the box next to the first line.
  5. Select “History Brush Tool” from the toolbar.
  6. Adjust the size of the brush and other adjustments from the tool options bar.
  7. Click and drag on the area where you want the original color of an image.

Steps for using Art History Brush

  1. 1.Select File > Open.
  2. Select “Art History Brush” tool from the toolbar.
  3. Now, choose any brush style from the brush preset given in the tool options bar or choose Windows > Brush.
  4. If you right click on the arrow given in the brush preset palette, a list of options will appear. These options include: New Brush, Rename Brush, Delete Brush etc.
  5. Set the various options given in the tool options bar ( i.e. brush size, mode, opacity, style, area and tolerance)
  6. Now, click and drag in the image to give paint effect.

  • While using "Art History Brush", press Shift + Right click with your mouse to open its "Style" menu.

History Brush Tool and Art History Brush options given in the Tool Options Bar:

When you select "History Brush Tool" or "Art History Brush" related tool options appear in the Tool Options bar.These options are described below:

  1. Brush: You can select any brush and can also change the brush size using this option. When you click on the brush option given on the tool options bar, a Brush Preset Picker will get appear with all the available brushes (by default). You can set the brush size with the help of “Master Diameter”.

  2. Mode: There are various options of mode (i.e. normal, darken, multiply, etc.). Mode controls how image pixels are affected. By default Normal is selected.

  3. Opacity: This option affects transparency of your brush. If you make it 1% then it becomes transparent.

  4. Flow: Flow and Opacity are related. This determines how fast paint is applied. Higher setting produces dark strokes.

  5. Airbrush: This will apply the color for as long as the left mouse button is pressed, even if you are not moving your cursor.

Some options of “Art history Brush” are same as of "History Brush Tool”. These are: Brush, Mode and Opacity. Some additional options of "Art History Brush" are given below:

  1. Style: This will control the shape of the stroke. Types of styles: Tight Short, Tight Medium, Tight Long, Loose Medium, Loose Long, Dab, Tight Curl, Tight Curl Long, Loose Curl and Loose curl Long.

  2. Area: You can define the area covered by the paint strokes. Larger area is covered if the greater size is entered.

  3. Tolerance: This determines how different a color must be from the original for the brush strokes to be applied to it.
